Touch Up Paint Questions Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I'm trying to get the car ready for summer and the SOC 2002.
My paint came in from Sweden for the 1994 C900TC Comm. Ed. I guess only 500 cars of the "metallic black" made it to the states so they don't stock the color in the dealers. Anyway, I thought I'd attack the stone chips on the hood last night and I had moderate success. Here's what I learned, and I'd appreciate tips from you seasoned car care gurus.
I cleaned the chips and put little post-it notes with arrows pointing to each defect. Why the sticky notes? For the past 6 1/2 years I've been a consultant in auto plants with most of the time spent in paint shops. They mark defects so nothing gets by. I fired up my 500W work lamp (tons of light is critical in paint inspection) and started dabbing on touch up paint with a paper matchstick. I let it dry about 1 1/2 hours, then I got out the Langka (see http://www.langka.com/) That stuff does what it says, but almost too well. Probably in 50% of the cases not only did the "blob" come off, but the paint in the chip came off, too.
It was in the low 50's when I did this, and the paint is from a spray can. I guess the metallic black doesn't come in a little container with a brush, only the spray. I sprayed it into a yogurt container lid (my artist tool!) and used the matchstick as a brush.
So, what can I do for better adhesion? I'm thinking I'll wash the car and wait for a 65+ degree day. I'll also let it dry for 3+ hours before I langka the blobs off. Same for the clear coat...
Also, what's best for a "brush"? do I use an actual small brush? toothpick? wood matchstick? paper matchstick? anything else?
Any tips?
Randy
