That probably isn't the charcoal canister. It captures fumes that escape from the tank when the car is sitting.
If you're getting a major gas smell in the cabin after fill-up, I'd look elsewhere. The first step is to peek under the right rear wheel-well right after filling up. There are a bunch of overflow hoses as part of the filler hose. One of those smaller hoses may have fallen off or otherwise cracked. I've even seen the filler hose develop a crack. There are also fittings on the top of the fuel tank, and quite often the rubber gasket for the fitting gets old and shrinks. While filling, some fuel may spill out from the rotte gasket. Look for signs of wetness on the top/side of the tank - especially signs of fuel that has flowed down the side of the tank and evaporated.
Lastly, there is a hose from the tank to the charcoal canister. It runs from the tank below the trunk to the canister, and I'm pretty sure it runs up through the right-hand C pillar, through the roof just above the headliner, and down through the right-hand A-pillar. If that hose is damaged, you'll get gas smell in the cabin.
But if you mostly smell it on fill-up, I'd look at the fuel filler hoses.
Good luck!
