Its not your charcoal canister. You might wanna look underyour car from the back, there you can see the back of the gas tank. My car smelled like gas everytime i filled it past 1/2 tank and gas would be visible on the back driverside of the gas tank.
Solution, get a set of torx drivers and remove the 2 bolts that secure the cargo floor and remove it. then there will be a silver disk with gasket on the driver side. Remove it too, then there is a flimsy plastic sheild, pull it out. here you can see the fuel pump, they are held in by the brown outer ring. Between the pump and the tank, there is an O-ring seal, this is a common problem. The seal begins to leak, You might even see gas pooled up on top of the pump.
BEFORE MESSING WITH AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE IN A LEAKING GAS TANK ASSURE BATTERY - CABLE IS REMOVED AND WELL CLEAR OF TERMINAL.
after this point, order a gasket from eeuroparts for ~3.50 and remove the brown outer ring, (disconect wires and hoses first, noting placement) then pull the assembly out about halfway and work the old gasket around off the top of the pump. the pump is 2 peices connected very badly, try not to have the bottom seperate and fall into the tank. (almost happend to me) slip the new gasket on the same way and reassemble.
*note- my gasket didnt look flawed, but after i put the new one in the problem went away completely.
In addition- seriously remember where the wires and hoses go, my power connector fell apart and i didnt know which wire went where. had to make an educated guess! not fun!
disconect the battery
and when loosining or tighining the pump do not let the pump turn at all. only turn the outer ring. and make sure you put the pump back in the same exact position it was taken out in. dont let it twist around.
good luck. hope my experiance with this one can help you.
