Those things crunch on my car and mine has basically no rust. I had an '87 that rusted to death (would not pass safety inspection the rust was so bad) and it would crunch like that when jacked on the jacking points. Basically, those jacing points really suck IMHO. I had my 900 jacked on those for 3 months while changing the engine and when I brought it back down, the doors wouldnt close right because the frame gradually got bent :( You may want to check for rust around the frame rails under the engine. If you have rust problems, then you will probably find rust there. Where the lower control arms bolts to the frame. On my dead '87, that whole area was finger loose! I actually peeled a one foot section of the right side frame rail off with just my fingers...
