Spring Stiffness K (lbs/in)=(W^4 x G)/(8 x N x D^3)
W - Wire diameter of spring (inches)
G - 11,500,000 for steel springs
D - Mean diameter of spring(inches)
N - Number of active coils
Each coil has it's own spring rate, changing any of the variables on any other coil on a spring will alter springrate. So a slight taper in coil thickness or taper in mean diameter on the whole spring will create progressive rate. The coils w/ smaller lb/in ratings will bind sooner then work through the tapered variable.
IE of B+G being prog w/ a tapering ID using the same thickness coil the spring rate will increase per coil as the ID gets smaller. So in action the larger coils will contract farther than the smaller coils so in the end the smaller coils are last to bind. But SD emailed me back saying the coils they received from B+G are linear. So, oh well :):)
