Obsiously a common misconception?
I got into a bit of a debate in autoshop today at my school. (hs senior)
this one kid made a presentation on turbochargers, and i completely disagree'd with basicly everything he had to say. I was respectful and let him complete his presentation, but then i expressed my understanding.
He basicly said that the turbocharger blows air into the engine to make it more powerfull. Thats a pretty vauge and laymen's way of describing a turbocharger system. It is considered an advanced level auto class. only for 4th year students. He was also incorect when he claimed exaust was sent to the intake. Similar to an earlier post on this site.
my take:
The turbo doesnt 'reroute' any exaust, it simply works like a water wheel in a river or stream, it simply utilizes the flow of exuast to preform a task. You'd need one hell of a current to spin the water wheel ~80,000RPM and thats exactly what the exaust provides. This in turn spins a 'compresssor turbine'on the same mounting shaft which essentialy makes the intake air more dense, providing for more fuel to be mixed with the given air volume, which in turn increses the theroetical displacement of the engine. BMW once made a car called the 745i. it was a turbocharged version of the regular 735i (meaning 3.5L) but bmw worked out the 'theoretical' displacement to be right around 4.5L at maximum boost. Thus the car was dubed 745i.
FYI the bmw 745i was never sold in america but a rare number of them exist because they were sent over as diplomat cars back in the 80's i belive. I have seen one here in an atlanta parking lot in pristine condtion.
anyways, am i flawed in my logic on turbos? anyone disagree or agree?
