You are pretty much dead on. Just rememeber that all engines are air pumps. They compress air and extract energy from its violent expansion. Forced induction (superchargers, turbochargers) increase the density of the air within the cylinder creating a bigger potential for energy. Your understanding of the mechanics is dead-on.
Nitpick: The 745i was based on on the 3.2l engine in the 733i. Yes, the 733i, 633i, and 533i all had 3.2l engines. FWIW, early 735s, 635s, and 535s technically had 3.4l engines. I believe it was only after '88 and introduction of the M6 and M5 that the motor grew to an actual 3.5l. The 745i designation was based in FIA rules. Under FIA, an engine with forced induction was rated at 140% of its physical displacement for purposes of classification. Thus, a 2.0l turbo engine would be equal to a 2.8l NA engine, and BMW's 3.2l six was condsidered equivalent of a 4.5l NA.
