why couldnt you repair the rear main seal?
what kind of bmw do you have, im guessing right now that you have either an e28 525 or 525e or maybe a e30 325 or 325i. both of these cars can have the 2.5L m20 motor you speak of.
I had a 1990 525i (e34) with the last production run of the m20 2.5L engine, it was a good motor, and i wouldnt ever consider putting a turbo on it, I'd much sooner put my 2500 bucks into a more expensive BMW or if not that, lots of N/A tuning parts. ie headers, exhaust, intake, preformance cylinderhead, ect.
the cost you'd have to put into making your turbo system is not worthwhile in my opinion.
if you love turbo so much why not get a junker saab turbo rather than a 'junker' bmw and spend tons of money making it a turbo...
consider the costs of
turbo
intercooler
boost controll
compression dropping measures(thick headgasket for example, among other things)
turbo ducting
oil cooler
possibly a high capacity radiator
and probably many unforseen costs.
