Basic steps to taking starter apart?

Ive got the starter out, and of course the motor now turns that Ive got it sitting on the garage floor. Anyway, I want to get into the starter and check the brushes, and replace them if need be. There are two little brass colored screws on the end opposite the pinion gear. They look like they are holding on a small cap. Once I get this cap off, is there much more inside to unbolt or does it pretty much just spring out thousands of little pieces all over my lap?
Thanks in advance,
Rob
