Yes...when you pull off the cap the brushes come out with the cap. The brushes snap in and may pop out.
Replacing the brushes varies with generators, they're often soldered in.
Replacing the end cap requires a 'trick' in the sense that you have to compress the brushes in their holders and keep them there while you put the brushes/cap over the end of the rotor. If you have small strong fingers you can generally do this by holding the brushes back and getting the brushes started over the end of the rotor/end of the commutator, then just pushing the cap on.
