There are a lot of postings on this. Most say to buy a turbo car. I had a 83 900S -gave it to the kids. Slow and safe. Here in No. Cal. I have to run in 3rd gear on any kind of hill.Got a 87T last year $1k. Clean but all maintenance had been defered(to me). It's so fast it is frightening. As fast as my 67 Dodge musclecar-but will stop and corner.Gas mileage is close to the 83. Transplant is very doable. I'm just completing a non-turbo conv. see recent post. Justin has done a bunch- see his sacsaabs site.I've been at it since last fall.Got the parts from local u-pull-its. Engine-$100ish,Rings,bearings,gaskets-$200ish,87 harness-$50(but obtained from 3 different cars),EZK,ECU,front carpet With the ECU pooch,misc.-several hundred, head work-$150,88-brake conversion kit-$150 -then traded kit for a rebuilt 5-Sp. trans.Cost is under $1K for rebuilt eng., trans.and conv. parts. However I was at scrapers at least twice a month for 3-8 hours at a time and under the hood much of the weekends. It became an obsessive challenge to rebuild. repair or replace just about everything that could be a wear point in a 200K mile car and as cheaply as possibly.Having done the conv. I agree with Justin that unless it is a very special body, color or style sell the 83 and buy a 87+ turbo.
