(maybe more than you wanted...)
On my '89 n/a the EZK system does NOT hunt for the point of incipient knocking. It follows the spark advance map based on rpm, load, etc. When the knock sensor hears knocking, it retards the timing in 3 degree increments from the map, & waits for a few seconds before returning to the map. While this is happenning, it signals the LH ECU which flashes the check-engine light 4 times but doesn't store a fault code.
The good news - low octane won't hurt your engine, because the timing will be retarded by this system.
The bad news - when this happens you'll probably notice the lack of power when the timing is retarded. It's also not accurately hunting for the point of incipient knock. 3 degrees is too big a change.
What to do - IMHO... Try 89 AON gasoline, & if your car doesn't do what I described, then you're OK. Climbing hills, just shift later so the engine doesn't lug. Just be aware of the business of 4 flashes of the lamp being a signal that the knock sensor heard something. Because with warmer weather it'll just be more likely to happen.
