my shiny brown UPS box came in today and i ran out to my car with my new 82deg thermostat and 82deg fan switch...i swaped them and put the whole package back together and got all the tools i had dropped into the moving parts of the engine. then i started it up and it ran nice and rough at about 250 RPM. i was like yea, ok this is lovely, the 82 deg t stat must keep the engine cool by running the idle so low that the engine doesnt produce heat... then i got out and began investigating the real problem, i traced the problem to the idle controll motor on a hunch and so i rememberd a few words of wisdom from this board. Following them i took the ICV and flushed it with carb cleaner...it dumped black fluid all over my parents freshly pressurewashed drive way for a solid 30 seconds.(easy come easy go) then once it came through clear i flushed it with WD-40 for about 10 seconds. then i reinstalled and everything was perfect again. (i was pretty worried, generally i like my idle around 800-900, 250 just wont do;-)
notice i didnt put the 82 deg fan switch in yet, I wanted to see what it would do with just the T-stat. I dont want the fans running much if i can avoid it, those things are junk and wear out so fast. so now instead of driving around and having the temp above half then stopping at a light and watching it almost tap the red then come back down slowly from the one fan's efforts. i get a tad lower than half and then at a light it goes to maybe 2/3rds and then it stabilizes with the fan cycling on and off about every 20-30 seconds. i bet if i put the 82 deg fan switch in it'd run the fan all the time at the stoplights and still be about the same place on the guage. its ok, if i ever wanna cool things down in a hurry i can hit my A/C button<i unhooked its wire cause A/C is for girls> and both fans spool up like turbine engines and i can literaly watch the downward motion of the coolant temp guage. it'll settle about 3-4 needle witdhs below half...the normal cruising temp.
Heres a question...i was pondering the idea of an adjustable fan switch
how i see it is this:
the fan switch lessens its resistance as it gets hotter, at a low enough resisistance it triggers a relay that turns on the fan.
so how about if i put a potentiometer inline with one of the sensor leads?
could i effectivly adjust the trigger point for the relay? This'd be really cool i think.
thanks,
austin
