Had voltage regulator and fuel filter replaced. Decided to do the brake/clutch bleeding myself, because mechanic wanted $150. I ordered an EZ Bleeder for $30 and will have a go next week. Anyhow, I also asked the mechanic to check out my P/S leak and very slow oil leak, and look it over for my upcoming 6k trip to CA and back (currently in TX).
He confirmed that the P/S leak is the rack, which I've suspected for a year. That was bad news, but the good news is I can probably take my 6k trip to CA and back just topping off fluid, notwithstanding the mess the thing makes underneath my car that the neighbors keep asking me about. I would think about getting it done beforehand, except that.....
Slow oil leak is coming from oil pump o-ring.. ah yes, the infamous $1 part necessitating the many hundreds of dollars of repair. So it looks like I'll be replacing oil pump o-ring, front seal, and probably HB while we're at it before I leave for the trip. I figure eventually this leak will screw me over if I let it go, so better now than in some much more inconvenient spot. Mechanic quoted me $300ish for labor. Fair? You guys know there's no way in hell I'm attempting to do this one myself.
Let's see, I need to stick in my new thermostat and flush out the coolant.. replace with orange MB stuff... upper rad hoses look a bit swollen, better do those as a precaution, bleed clutch and brakes... change oil, and stock up on P/S fluid, and I think I'm ready to go, aside of course from the unforseen things that may pop up out of nowhere, as is the pattern.
By the time I'm done, that's about $2k I've put into this car since I bought it 15months ago.. and this is a relatively low mileage, well kept, clean example, without any obvious flaws when I bought it...and I've done the vast majority of the labor. That works out to a $125 monthly repair bill, not to mention the time I waste working on it, worrying about it, and generally being inconvenienced. My love for the design, style, and function of the car, which is supposed to compensate for the hell with which it torments me, is beginning to wear thin.
This my friends, is why I'm not happy with my Saab today.
