Letting the crank seal go...signs of impending HB doom?

bad karma indeed...sorry man.
I of course am tempted to let the crank seal go, because it will PROBABLY be fine through the trip. The thing is, it's never going to get better...and eventually if let go it will screw me over at a less convenient time, if not on this trip then on the way to work or whatever. It will never get cheaper either. When you say I'll know when the HB is bad, do you mean by the unhappy screeching noise? I currently have an unhappy screeching noise which I can solicit by slipping the clutch a little, such as starting uphill. Particularly noticable when alt under heavy load (i.e. right after startup) I had thought that this was one of the alt/wp belts slipping. (firewall side one still looser despite new alt. bushings and new matched pair of belts) Mech. told me he thought it was more likely the HB; that one belt wouldn't squeal like that if the other was tight... I'm still thinking that one over...thoughts?
If I'm gonna let something go, I feel better about the P/S rack... I don't see it likely to catastrophically fail and leave me stranded on the side of the road... worst case I figure I run out of fluid, cut the belt to save the pump, and have to muscle it around in parking lots.
sigh...
