How good your stereo sounds not only depends upon the money you invest but the time you spend. I decided upon the adapters and spent a bit of time with them, but worth the $20. Certainly you can make a new rear deck, but that's just as much time, and probably about the same cost in supplies. You lose the stock look, which makes your car more appealing looking to thieves. Cutting the stock rear is not as viable, due to the raise on the sides for the speaker grills. I suppose it depends upon your priorities and how much you care about your stereo.

I managed to pick up a brand new Blaupunkt Casablanca CD51 for $200 total on eBay. The list price is $430. I love the price, and am quite pleased with its performance.

I find that a lot of the MP3 decks are somewhat lacking and their cost is inflated, it depends. If you know how to handle yourself on auctions, eBay can be a good source for audio equipment.
