My 82T had that condition when I first bought it for restoration. Turns out the rubber seal around the shift rod that runs through the firewall was torn and oil from the leaky engine would flow into the cabin through that hole. The carpet matting was soaked. Both sides in fact. I can't account for why only one side of your car is affected. Perhaps a good eyeballing of the firewall and shift rod area will tell you more.
