It seems as though I win some sort of prize being the only one to report 5th gear grinding :-)
I believe this came about when someone else drove the car and probably beat the tar out of it (and perhaps bent a shift lever) trying to get it into reverse without lifting the collar. Just a theory. When I drove the car ('88 SPG) after this incident it wouldn't go into 5th at all. After many days I finally was able to get it into 5th but it grinds badly unless I match the RPMs.
Other Notes
----- -----
I feel the c900 shifting is on the sloppy side. The clutch action isn't bad but the shifting isn't sharp like a Honda or VW. But if treated well the clutch/transmission should provide good (and long) service. I have 290k miles on my transmission (210k on clutch) and I attribute this to my driving style versus me somehow lucking out and getting an unusually durable transmission.
For starters the shifting is sloppy and you can't really just bang through the gears like you can with a VW. You need to develop a feel for the shifting and don't force it. I get a bit of resistance going from 1st to 2nd from time to time and I give it easy pressure until it slips into gear (it usually takes about 1/10 of a second or so). When going from R to 1 be FULLY stopped. Same with going into R.
And don't downshift like you're in an F1 car. This is a sure way to a premature transmission breakdown. The engine and transmission are intended to make the car go -- brakes are made to make the car slow down, so use them for that.
