Other than just plain old not trusting the mechanics around this area and having a serious case of good, old Yankee cheapness, I get instant gratification from wrenching on my 900.
In my professional life, it takes months or years for a project to go from the initial contact with the client, through the various stages of design and review, to the bidding phase. Then it takes 2 or 3 years after that for my part of the project to be built by the lowest bidder (who spends more time than I was able to put into the design to come up with strategies for change orders.)
So, wrenching on my 900s has been immensely satisfying. There are a few things I'll leave to the professional techs, but most of it is my happily skinned knuckles.
