HI ALL,
been trying to read through all the posts to pinpoint my problem and after 2 hours of reading decided to write my question.
got an 84 Saab 900 5 speed.
fixed/replaced: crank pulley, alternator, master brake cylinder.
when they replaced the pulley the alternator went out. when they replaced the alternator and belts one of the belts screeched, smoked and snapped. replaced again and adjusted. then replaced master brake cylinder.
NOW when i start the car is wants to stall, have to push the pedal flat to the floor till the engine "catches" even then it sometimes suddenly starts to stall. once i am on the road and driving it is fine. another thing that happens when i first start the engine AND accelerate, the belt screeches - i got out and checked it looks like the one closest to the drive side (is that the alternator belt?).
Mechanic has no machine and says a sensor is out and i should get it diagnosed. but when i check under the hood "accelerating" from there i notice a sound coming from the charcoal cannister. one hose seems to be "leaking air" when i went to touch it it broke off.
OK sorry this is long, almost there.
do i have to replace the cannister with a new one? do they open up? what is inside? does the inside need to be replaced - is it some kind of filter in there?
if it is not the cannister what sensor would it be, or what else could it be?
could that "air leak" be the cause of the stuttering and stalling???
why does that belt screech when i start up and also sometimes when i accelerate after stopping at a light?
ONE more point!
there is a wire harness that is on the battery side. it has two smaller wires that clip onto the car underneath. one of those seems to have a problem, sometimes my car won't start and i have to get out and jiggle the wires till eventually i can start it. Have three nasty little burns from trying to do that.
what is the best thing to do with the wiring? is a harness expensive, do i have to replace the whole thing or is there a wire or two that i can replace.
this car i love, but it has cost me a bundle to fix all those things. just about run out of any money at all. but i figure i have fixed (touch wood) just about all there is to fix!!! so why sell now?
thanks very much for your patience if you got to the end of this post.
thanks in advance for any advice or input.
if there is anyone in the Brentwood MD area (or not too far away) who would like to make a few bucks helping me out or who knows of an honest saab mechanic let me know.
If anyone knows where i can get a Bentley manual i would be grateful - don't tell me to go to the saabstory link cos they use Amazon who don't have to book (i waited four months for them to finally tell me they can't get the book).
thanks again.
