I am gearing up to do a 120k miles service on my 92 900s, and in preparation I have started learning about the engine for the first time.
Thanks to people on tsn here, I am replacing a bunch of coolant hoses and thermostat, and backflushing and refilling with mercedes coolant : )
one question: i havent seen any indication in the service section of bentley for when a timing chain should be replaced. Should this only be replaced when it starts rattling or when it gives some indication of failing?
two question: The manual transmission oil ... on 91 and later, there is no longer a drain plug. does this mean you never have to change this, just top it off?
three question: Sort of the one i am the most worried about. I am preparing to redo my suspension, and I just put a new stereo head and speakers, and a new headliner, fog lamps, etc etc. before i spend the big cash for the suspension, and later possibly engine mods, I am concerned about the condition of the car and if it will continue to hold up for years to come.
as far as i can tell, there isnt any serious structural damage due to corrosion. except for 2 or 3 really minor places, the paint is in perfect condition (with the exception of people induced scratches). I was under the back of the car near the wheel wells the other day, and i saw quite a bit of pitting and stuff. Nothing is rusted with holes in it, but decent amounts of metal are no longer painted black, the paint is falling off and the metal is brown and very rough (oxidized, right?) the sway bar is in similar condition on its outer surface.
along the same lines, another one that bothers me: on the side of the battery, the exaust manifold shows a lot of the same type of surface. the lower 2/3 of it is still silvery like it starts off, but the top is all gnarly and rusted and stuff. the metal there is really thick, so i dont think there is any chance of it failing structurally, but it sure doesnt look good. can i clean this? or is it definately really bad?
id really appreciate any advice everyone could give me. im an avid do it yourselfer, but have only recently gotten into auto care (as i never owned a car before a few years ago, and was too busy with school to get into it before a few months ago). I am very hesitant to take it into a shop and have some jerk tell me whatever he feels like it, and not really be any better off afterwords.
thanks!!
