Timing would have to be way off, like BobH said... But I'll assume for now that you got that close enough. Try your best to put it back where it originally was.
You say backfire... that means the smoke comes out of the intake manifold? I'll assume you mean it comes from the exhaust pipe, & that means once in a while a cylinder actually fires.
You smell gas, so you've got fuel. Too much? I'd say fuel pressure regulator, but does '85 have CIS? If so, I'm not the expert. Airflow measuring plate in the fuel distributor stuck? Unplug the 5th injector (cold-start valve?) so it doesn't flood even more?
Consider - once I had flooded ('89 16v na) & got the plugs really wet. I removed the plugs, unplugged the injector wires, & cranked the starter to dry the cylinders. The plugs looked really clean & had a good spark outside, but it still wouldn't start. Once in a while it would fire, cough a little smoke, but never start. In desperation I put in NEW plugs, & it started right up like nothing was ever wrong. So I learned that flooded/fouled plugs can LOOK like they're OK.
