If you know for certain that it is not the shift rod-to-transmission clamp that has loosened, I'd check the clutch system. Could be one or the other slave or master cylinders, or it could be the section of rubber hose on the clutch fluid line just aft of the slave cylinder. If it begins to degrade and puff out instead of hold shape, then you get no clutch disengagement. In my case, that happened gradually and not instantly. It would occur when the engine was hot - the heat bringing on the condition for the hose to balloon. To check clutch engagement, lift up the plastic window cover on the clutch shroud, point a flashlight down there as someone depresses the pedal. If there's not enough forward (actually reverse because of the SAAB engine layout) movement of the release bearing, you got no clutch. An 85 is about the right vintage for a clutch system failure.
