How do I know it's time to change shocks/springs?

My '88 SPG has 290K miles and original shocks and springs. I have a hunch they probably are close to being worn out but the car doesn't bounch around like other cars I've had with bad shocks.
My newly acquired '92 Turbo has 132K miles and probably also has original suspension parts. Should I put new shocks and springs on the list of things to do just for good measure?
