Hi Paul:
Not to be argumentative but I've been looking into how air pressure affects rolling resistance. To be honest I haven't found anthing entirely conclusive yet but what I have seen doesn't seem to show a significant reduction in RR above normal inflation. In order to see such a difference in brake wear you'd have to see perhaps a 50% decrease in RR which I find hard to believe, again since most of the RR in a properly inflated tire is in the tread (not the sidewalls, and the deformation in the sidewalls in an underinflated tire is what is noticed) and changing the pressure doesn't affect the tread (much). But I'll keep looking now that you've intrigued me :-)
Additionally I wouldn't classify the 940 wagon as very heavy. A 900T weighs 2904 pounds and a 940 wagon weighs 3208 -- that's a difference of two (relatively small) passengers and I don't think you'd find such a small difference in weight making such a significant difference in brake wear.
My point? I'm a recovering Volvo owner myself (850 wagon) and these cars a notorious for chewing up rotors. My bet is you either were unlucky with two sets of rotors (or lucky with the most recent) or something wasn't quite right with the previous brake jobs. There simply isn't enough data to conclude cause and effect.
That said, I'm glad your current rotors are holding up well!
Cheers,
Doug Fuller
PS. If you happen to have any information on tire RR versus air pressure I'd be interested. Thanks.
