I'll take a different approach... Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: New (old) saab price question, Andrew Boyce-Lewis, Fri, 21 Jun 2002 21:17:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'd like to hear a little more about the '79 900... Inherently, a '79 900 probably isn't worth the sheet metal it's made of anymore, but a '79 900 isn't without potential. The weird things about c900s is that underneath they're all about the same. I'd totally pay $3200 for a mint '79 900T with a h-motor (B201 or B202) engine swap. It's not like you get anything special from a body perspective with a newer car... There are some drawbacks on the truly old cars - lack of power accessories, not-so-good air conditioning, and some difficulty can be had sourcing replacement interior parts. But, they also have their benefits - lack of power accessories to break, and ultimately any desirable parts from a later car can be swapped in with but a few exceptions. My 5-door is living proof of this - for all intents and purposes it's an '87 SPG under it's 20 year old paintjob!
From my experience, a $3000 Saab is hit or miss. You may luck out and get a sweet deal on an underappreciated car (my '90 SPG, for example) or you may end up with a badly abused car that just happened to receive weekly washings (my '88 900T...). If the '79 has great paint, no rust, a damn-near perfect interior, and documentation on its engine swap, it may very well be worthwhile. I'd certainly like to hear more....
