My 1990 went throught the same thing last summer. I live in NYC and do alot of stop & go in traffic and in hot condiitions. When ABS light and Brake fluid light go on at same time manual say " very dangerous" and to not drive. But. I found that the brake ability was never decreasing even with alot of driving after lights came on. Lights would only come on after stop & go and started to come on faster & faster. So. What I did was this.
1. Changed brake fluid by flushing system with Dot 4 fluid. Probably Dot 3 was added in at some time in this cars life. Dot 4 is required by system and has much higher temperature specs than Dot 3, also brake fluid breaks down and infuses with water vapor from natural condensation also lowering boiling point of fluid.

Now. this worked well last summer and lights never went on again. But. this summer lights have reared ugly heads again, albeit sporadically and only in hot traffic. What I did this year is to clean off all brake fluid lines which were oily and dirty to help with cooling of fluid. this seemed to help as light has not appeared in last few stop & go events.

My opinion. This is an error code designed or which simply shows up when hot fluid situation occurs. My pads are also getting lower this year which may also increase heating of fluid, also my rotors are warped and grinding slightly at outer edge where a lip has formed. This also contributes to heat build up . Just my $2 advice good Luck
