The harmonic balancer is many times referred to on Saabs as the crankshaft pulley. Mine squaled as you describe upon startup as well. What caused mine to go bad was a leaky front crankshaft seal. The pulley (balancer) is vertical facing the firewall. It helps to remove the air conditioning compressor (if equipped), and all belts. I went at it from the top (some say bottom). Have a 30mm socket on hand to remove the crankshaft pulley. When I replaced all seals and crankshaft pulley it took me about 3 hours and I had never done it before but have mechanancal experience. I have included a link that helped me (maybe you have seen this but if not this site is fantastic, it has helped me many times).
