Marking my Harmonic Balancer this afternoon....

I plan on marking my Crankshaft Pulley/Harmonic Balancer this afternoon, do the discs face the firewall or the ground? By this i mean, are they positioned horizontally OR vertically. I hope somebody understands what i mean. I'm just beginning to attempt work myself, and am not familiar with this part. Any suggestions/tips on how to locate it (i know what it looks like, but will i recognize it right away?)
As my start-up squeal doesn't occur all the time, i think this is going to be a job that spans a week or two, with me marking the pulley today and then starting the car a few times. If i don't get the squeal upon start up after i make the markings, i'll have to "let it be" until i hear the squeal a few times in the upcoming week, then put the car on jack stands once again to look. Does this make sense that the "test" will have to be done over a period of time since the squeal is intermittent? (thanks, the newbie is double checking his common sense)
I plan on using white out to mark the discs. Anything else i need to know or to be careful of?
As always, THANKS.
