Tie Rod End / Ball Joint woes. HELP! Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
OK, the saga continues.
Thanks to Kevin O who came over today and gave me some pointers.
It looks like my tie rod end is shot. I've torn the boot, and everything I try doesn't work for getting the nut out. I hold it so the taper tightens it up, I grab it with channel locks and vice grips, it just spins. So i'm going to grind off the nut I think. Any advice before I start cutting?
Also I need some tips once I cut the nut off, how do I take the tie rod end off the steering rack? I see the rod going into the car. Any tips on keeping that from spinning? Pipe wrench?
Next: ball joints. I've got both joints out of the suspension system, and I've got PB blaster in the hub. The axle nut is off. I think I'm going to get the whole thing off and work on the ball joints out of the car.
The forks on my pickle fork are bent. It's an Auto Parts Store special, not a craftsman or something prefessional. Once the hub assembly is off, though, I can use a chisel and hammer.
ARGHHHH I hope the car is done before the 4th of july long weekend!
Randy
