Re: Tie Rod End / Ball Joint woes. HELP! Posted by RS [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Tie Rod End / Ball Joint woes. HELP!, Randy Thatcher ![]() ![]() |
There are a few things you can do here.
In order to loosen the nuts on the ball joint tapers, put the ball joints back in the control arms and put the bolts back in. Then jack up the end of the lower control arm to load them - this will push the tapers back into the arms and put enough friction on the tapers for you to undo the ball joint nuts. You'll need a crowfoot wrench or an open end wrench to get the upper one loosened.
For the tie rod end, get a 22-mm flare crowfoot or a pipe wrench and turn the locknut in the right direction to loosen it. Once the tie rod turns in the outer tie rod end, just keep turning it to unscrew it from the tie rod end. If the inner boot binds, take the clamp off it (keep it handy for when you're done and are sewing everything else up). A very small vice grips can give you enough clearance to turn the tie rod without hitting anything and having to reclamp it every half-turn.
