Ideas for extra gauges

Has anyone mounted extra gauges in the top radio slot? When I got my car, three gauges were mounted in the bottom slot. They fit well, but they were a pain to look at, to far from my line of sight and I have the unfortunate tendancy to drift when I'm not looking at the road. Boost guages are addictive and you only really look at them when you are accelerating, hard. Anyhow, I rerouted everything to the top and am now trying to figure out the best way to mount them as the mounting bracket won't fit into the slot... zip ties won't cut it much longer. I'm thinking of using a block of wood, drilling the appropriate holes, and painting it to match (close anyhow). Has anyone got any other ideas, pictures, experience with this?
