I had the same sized Pirelli P6's also. When they wore out, I didn't want to buy new rims or try anything wild or testing the limits of the rim/car by putting a wide tire that might rub against something or be too wide for the rims.
Therefore, I chose the Yokohama AVS Intermediate 195/65VR15. It has great grip and allows turning a corner fast. The drawbacks are fast wear and reportedly bad traction in light snow.
After those wore out, I got Dunlop A60M2 (correct numbers?). Those were what I considered cheaper good tires. The car is getting older and I was afraid the car would get arthritis so I didn't think I needed the very best performance tires.
I thought that the Dunlops were almost as good as the Yokohama's and a tad better than the P6. Of course, the P6 have been replaced by first the P600 and then the P6000. Both of my tire choices were better than the original Pirelli P8's.
