It cools somewhat better than R12, some 7%, but it does have the disadvantage of having to be completely installed...you can't top it up because the R406A is a mixture. OTOH, an R134A conversion once accomplished can easily be topped up with additional R134A without sucking and recharging.
It also doesn't have the high operating pressures of the R134A.
Pat Goss of Goss's Garage (he has a shop in MD) who also talks on MotorWeek on television doesn't do R134A conversions anymore. There are some issues with getting all the old lubricant out and the new lubricant compatible with R134A....
