First the legal stuff, its against the law to vent R-12. But so is speeding. You can do a "dirty" conversion, not getting all the old oil out, but the results wiil be less than spectacualar. At a minimum you will need a vacume pump to suck all the R-12 out. Run some searches, here, on the 9000 board, and try google.com for r-134A conversion. Lots of good info and DIY advice out there. I'd suggest finding the leak and fixing it too. If it leaked before, its only gonna get worse. And when you refrigerant leaks it takes some oil with it, so not only are you out the freon, your risking burning up your compressor and contaminating the whole system.
You can get your R-12 permit online! For around $40 and take an online open book test, you can buy your own R-12!
Most common leak I've seen on the 900's are at the metal end fitting crimps on the 2 hoses running to the compressor. Don't know any way to fix em other than replacement.
