No way to measure the oil level without evacuating the system of R12 first, but 8 fluid ounces is the norm. BTW, that oil is rather thin, like WD40, so if you've got a leak around the compressor, the visual indication on the hood is not the amount that has actually leaked. Most of what actually leaked out has evaporated. If the leak has been there for at least a few years, you can reasonably estimate that at least half of the oil has leaked out. An overly noisy compressor is also a sign of low oil. There's a bearing ring plate in there that gets a lot of abuse and not enough lubricant can get it "singing."

The sight glass method is a very good indicator of proper charge. If you can get the R12 recharge can that includes oil in it, use that. I've seen the R134 cans that include 2 or so ounces of oil and I would imagine you can also get same with R12. That would be a safe recharge if you suspect a low level of oil having leaked.
