My freon-12 is a bit low (cloudy sight glass) but still has some pressure as the system still engages. I "dug up" an old can of R-12 with the proper hose and want to recharge it rather than go through the conversion process to R-134. Questions:

1. How much compressor oil should be in the system and how does one measure it? There apprears to be a very slight leak at the compressor seal, since there is some oily residue on the bottom of the hood directly above it. This leads me to believe that the system migh be short a bit of oil. Note that the system had not been charged for at least five years, so I don't believe that this is a major leak.

2. How much freon to put in without a set of guages? Instructions with the old recharge kit say to add until sight glass is clear - which may work. Can one overcharge from one 12-oz. can? Any better guesses?

I don't want to get into the R-12 vs. R-134 debate. My SAAB is almost 20 years old, so keeping it running economically is already saving a large chunk of the environment!
