How do I fix a leaky EGR valve (engine dying on idle)?

Hi
My '87 turbo 155 has recently started dying on me when idling if I don't disengage the auto-tranny. At first I thought it was the auto playing up, until I noticed a leaky valve bolted on under the intake manifold. I consulted a mechanic about it, and was told it was an "EGR valve" that was safe to remove (it doesn't do anything important). While running, the engine clearly loses vacuum from the two tubes that run from the engine block to the valve. The mechanic could fix it for a huge amount of money.
Assuming that the leaky valve is the cause of ny idling problems, does anyone know of a cheap and cheerful fix that plugs the leak/s? The reason I haven't yet removed the whole thing is that there supposedly is a internal connection from the engine block to the valve, that is, a hole in the block that I don't know to correctly plug.
Help, anyone?
Best regards,
Jimmy Schmincke
