The project will take some finesse, but it's doable by a moderately skilled non-pro. This coming weekend (if it doesn't rain canines, felines, and other species), I'll be pulling the engine/transmission in my parts car and getting ready to transplant the trans into my good one and do the headgasket and put a new timing chain in while the engine is out.
There's all sorts of good technical info on repairs, rebuilds, etc for 900s. The link below gets you into Townsend Imports' technical documents and you can browse the various sections. You'll want to take a look at the section under ENGINES called REPLACEMENT OF FRONT CRANK SEAL AND OIL PUMP O RING SAAB 900 - 93 & 94 CV. That'll get you partway.
We've got a lot of regulars on the C900 board who can talk you through everything. And there are some guys who have put together other sites with pics of the various procedures.
Just ask and you'll get lots of info.
If you didn't pick one up, get a manual: Haynes (cheap, not great on electrical stuff but OK through '87) or a Bentley (Under $40 from one of the sponsors with really decent electrical section).
