16V cam followers questions (+)

The car is a 1986 900S 16V, 2-door, 5 speed.
I have cam follower noise. I replaced all oil supply lines and nipples under the valve cover a few years ago. It seemed to help for a short time, but then went back to its usual clatter. I am pretty much convinced that I have one or more cam followers making the noise.
I need to determine which of the followers are making the noise. I can pin point approximately using a stethoscope. However, is there a way to find out for sure? Bentley indicates that pushing on them will help determine this. When I tried that last time, I could not push on any of them and make them budge at all... I was wondering if it would be OK for me to run the engine with the valve cover off? Will it run? Will oil spray all over? Will I have oil pressure problems if I start the engine with the valve cover off? This could also be a way to visually check if the oil supply nipples actually work.
Any tips on changing the cam followers would be greatly appreciated. I am planning to sell the car right after I get rid of the noise.
Another thing is valve cover gasket. Last time I did it, I followed Bentley and used a sealant (I think, Loctite "grey") in the areas shown in the book. Some people recommend using no sealant, just a fresh valve cover gasket. After doing it last time, I have had minor leaks from the valve cover. I would like to avoid leaks this time. Should I use a sealant on the valve cover? If yes, which one? How much of it? Should I follow Bentley again or put it around the whole gasket surface, not just in places shown in the book?
