Check Engine Light on...relationship to the A/C?

I've looked for any previous BB postings regarding this unusual occurence, but I couldn't find any. I know it's common for the Check Engine (CE) light to come on, but can anyone tell me if this is a possible reason? I let a friend drive my '91 900 for a day, and he always cranks up the a/c. I happen to be rather conservative with the a/c, as I just roll down my windows except for on extremely hot days. When I got the car back, I proceeded to turn the air control down to the "0" in the 6 o'clock position, but I accidentally failed to turned off the a/c button (snowflake) or the recirculating button. I drove it this way for about 10 miles of highway driving, and suddenly the CE light would come on for about two minutes at a time, at about 5 minute intervals between each. It was dark, and I had to go another 100 miles, so I just kept driving with the CE light flashing intermitently like this (the car was running fine/normally). About 50 miles later I finally noticed the a/c button was still compressed, so I pressed it again to turn it off. The CE light never came on after that for the remainder of the trip. Is the CE light in any way connected to the a/c? Is the a/c part of the electrical/fuel injection system, as the owner's manual says that the CE light generally comes on when there's a problem with the fuel injection system or electrical system. Any comments on this would be appreciated.
