It's a question that I don't often see asked in these threads but it has a lot of relevance IMHO. I have a recently acquired 91S convertible with an auto trans. This thing runs well above the halfway mark at 70 on the highway on a 90 degree afternoon. Anytime I'm going slowly enough to hear, the fan is cycling (fans, as of tonight)on a hot day approaching a light. This is with a brand new radiator (glad I saved the old one!), a new 82 T-stat and a standard 92C fan switch. I have no reason to think that the water pump is producing sub-standard circulation either. The problem was even more acute in an 84T auto I previously owned (I hate the auto but if it's working I'll live with it 'til it fails!).

The bottom line-the auto trans dumps a large amount of heat into an already marginal cooling system. A significant (~40%) fraction of the waste heat in an engine is absorbed by the oil. In the 5 speeds a substantial fraction of this heat is dissipated through the trans casting. In the auto trans though, this heat along with all the heat produced by the trans itself is fed into the coolant in the NA cars. It's a poor arrangement that I don't think is very common in other makes. I'm thinking about switching to the liquid-air cooler used on the turbos (sans the thermostat arrangement) to see if it helps. Anyone ever crunch numbers on the cooling systems heat exchange capacity, fraction used at normal design conditions etc.?
