Kevin,
Hi. My Mom recently bought a 1990 900 (base) and it has the same 16V 2.0 Litre engine as your car. I found out that the engine's fuel injection computer (LH-Jetronic is the type of fuel inj., more specifically, LH 2.4) monitors sensors on the engine and stores any fault codes in it's memory. Some codes make the C.E. come on as you drive, others do not.
You can access the fault codes stored in the LH computer, also called a "control unit," with either an expensive SAAB ISAT tool (Intelligent SAab Test), usually a dealer only item; OR you can do-it-yourself with a fused, switched jumper wire. You can set the LH control unit in a mode to blink the Check Eng. light in a five-digit sequence=one particular fault code. For instance, a 1-2-2-2-1 flash(one flash, stop, two flashes, stop, two more, stop, two more, stop, one flash, end) of the C.E. light is code 12221. The location of the LH-control unit's jumper wire connector is under the rear seat, in a 10-pin connector under a small black cap.
NOTE: You can only check codes with jumper wire on LH-Jetronic 2.4 equipped cars ('89 or newer 900 Turbo 16V or '88 or newer 900 base and 900S 16V). Older 16V use 2.2 which doesn't blink C.E. light for codes.
I've linked my post with both code-pulling links and what codes mean below. Hope this helps!
