Another engine wiring harness question, help!

Hi everyone,
Thanks, everyone for all the information that you have given me so far. I have further pursued some of the suggestions and hints that you guys mentioned to me.
Here are two major questions that have come up that I need help with:
1. Is it possible to replace my 85 engine harness for an 87, 88, 89
engine harness for my 85 Saab 900 turbo? My mechanic says that the
85 and 86 engine harnesses are identical, but that he cannot use
the 88 engine harness to replace my 85 one. Is this true? Is it
possible but just not as straightforward, or is it absolutely
impossible because of all the differences?
2. Several of you said that it is possible to check the health or
condition of the engine harness and any reputable mechanic should
do so during routine inspections. I have always had a minor tune
every 3 months or 3000 miles and I of course have been right on
schedule for my major tunes every 50K. When I asked my mechanic
if he checked my harness during the last minor tune or if he
routinely checked it he said that it was not possible. So could
someone tell me exactly how you go about checking it during these
routine servicing so I can go in to talk with him armed with a
little more knowledge and expertise?
Thanks so much, and of course if any of you know where I can get an 85
or 86 used engine harness that is in okay condition to put into my ailing
car, please let me know about it. I live in San Francisco. The part number is 8594319.
Thanks so much,
Randi
