As of the statement " it's impossible " that, kind of hints that he is not completly familiar with Saab or Volvo (for that matter).

Both of them have a cronic desease in certain years to disintegrate wire harnesses.

At several points in the engine compartment, the wires are visible. At other points the wires are bundled up and covered with a black sheating.

IF the wires( where they are visible ) have started to loose their protective insulation, you can bet your bottom dollar that the insulation is also coming off where the wires are protected by the black sleeve.

Especially where two different wire bundles are glued together. The glue itself seems to have a deteriorating effect on the wires.

This is just the nature of this wire bundles and is only related to certain years, ( to some extend, if the car is very old with a lot of mileage, I have even seen 86,87 and 88 with bad harnesses )

If you also look down by the fuse box, where the wire bundle goes in to driver door. You might have bad wiring there too. ( which is not related to engine, but never the less)

As for compatibility of harnesses, Ones I converted a 88T harness to fit a 86T, The 87T harness was not possible to use but the 88 worked 1/2 way ok.

I haven't done a 85 so I can't say for sure, but most of the time you don't know until you are standing there with the two cars and see the whole setup.
