Anders, Tom,
great to have two real mechanics (and not "parts exchangers") here (well, over there, I'm living in germany).
here most "mechanics" can only put new parts in till the car works (or won't work).
we did a head gasket on an 92 900 turbo (with red box and 16" wheels from it's first day) some 4 weeks ago.
the car had 225.000 kms and we just bought it a day ago. while test driving we recogniced a tiny, but steady stream of really very small air bubbles into the expansion tank, but only with hot engine. cool engine: absolutely no bubbles.
no oil in water or vice versa.
so we bought it cheap, took a trailer to get it home (400kms, thanks BMW for lending the X5 and trailer) and disassembled the same day.
results: one water passage had eaten/corroded its way almost into bore #1 (even on a 2.0 liter), but the block was really fine. the head had to be skimmed by 0.15 mm because of corrosion from water channel.
3 days later we reassembled, did a test drive, packed the car and were off for a 3 weeks holiday to south italy (with trailer for 2 motorbikes).
yesterday we returned: absolutely no problems and 3500 kms driven.
BTW: celebrated cars 10th birthday (29/06/2002) with a good bottle of red wine and the decision to give it a new radiator because of the usual symptoms.
Uwe K
(hope it wasn't too boring)
