push in on the ac button. if that don't work find the fan relay, i think in the 80 they were still in the fuse box, and smack it. may be sticky. if it still doesn't come on, then check the fuses. if it spins easily by hand without a grinding noise, probably not the fan but a cruddy connection. if you are in high moisture area most likely the culprit. if your antifreeze is good, your radiator, thermostat and heater core is in good shape, you shouldn't have to worry about it overheating and the one fan would be more than adequate. if the car gets really hot that second fan kicks in. if you have to replace it, just get the motor from a chain dealer. i think volkswagon uses the same one, but not really sure of that. that way you don't have to mess with the mounts.
