wouldn't have an automatic transmission pre 1991 or 92. they struggled with the heat build up in prior years eating the trannies alive at about 100k. The 89 manual was beefed up but the old 5 speeds are almost bullit proof...the really old 4 speeds were great but really needed that 5th gear to keep the revs down. most automatics are converted to manuals the first time they fail.<p>if you shop around and you ask the right questions and know where to look for defects on these cars you can score some pretty good deals. i just bought an 89 with 60K on it for 395 dollars because the "key won't come out" didn't have the heart to tell him that it has to be in reverse to get the key out as they had already tore the entire lock mechanism out trying to do it...so for about 600 bucks including the parts i got a $3000 car...also picked up a 91 with a bad auto tranny...and even a tranny is 2K the total cost of this car would be 2300 bucks.<p>tell you how addictive these are...these last two make 5 in the yard. there are lots of parts houses out there that carry parts for these little darlings now..much better than the old days and this is the best resource there is. buy one, you'll like it.
