Skip 87(non-water cooled turbo and bad breaks.) Go for '88. '89(if the fuel injection computer has been upgraded already,told it is very expensive). '90-'93('91-'93 turbos are 185 hp. You will have less repairs if you go pre-air bag/ABS.(I have seen a lot of posts on the problems people can have with that stuff.) This would be '90-'93. I don't think the '89s had air bag/ABS yet but I might be mistaken. I've heard the non-turbo may be more reliable (I may be wrong on this) but the turbo is so fun to drive and is of excellent design. I think the '88-93 900 turbo hatchback is the most classic multi-purpose Saab. Find one that has been well taken care of and loved and the engine will go for a long time. I didn't have all this info when I got my '88 so I got lucky as I have the water cooled turbo, the better brakes from the Saab 9000 and no ABS and air bags to go bad. When my engine or tranny finally dies I'm having a good condition used 185 hp turbo engine put in along with the tranny and pinion bearing. We will adjust it to get it up over 200 hp. That's going to be really fun to see how that compares to my old 160 hp engine. Good luck in your search for the classic. Keep on Saabing, Best, KB.
