Dilemma: repair or dump it and start over? Help!

I recently purchased an 87 900 T Convertible and paid way too much. 203k miles, transmission whine and head gasket leak, no A/C, probably needs a new air flow meter, etc, etc. I was new to Saabs (I love driving the car), and didn't do my normal due diligence.
Now it's time to pay the piper: head gasket blew, transmission is about to give out. Repairs for those and other needed items will be about $4000. My options are to get it fixed, or dump it for real cheap and start over and pick a lower mileage candidate that has been take care of.
The question is if I start over with a new "used" car with about 100k miles (all I can afford right now), will I be better off than just dealing with all the mechanical issues facing me, or will I be facing the same repairs 20,000 miles down the road?.
BTW: top is in great shape as is body. Rides and handles well. Engine felt pretty strong before head gasket blew.
REcommendations?
